Hand-colored ambrotype portrait of Confederate officers Colonel Robert D. Lilley (left) and Major James Templeton, c. 1861. Lilley served with the Lee Rifles, a militia unit which became Company C of the 25th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was later promoted to Brigadier General during the war. Templeton served as a surgeon in the Army of Northern Virginia.

Photograph of a leg wound suffered by Union soldier Daniel Snyder who served with Company G the 4th Maryland Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Snyder died three days after the leg’s amputation at Harewood Hospital in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 1864. His leg wound was possibly received during the Battle of Spotsylvania.
