He suffered a skull fracture from a saber blow to his head at the Battle of Brandy Station on June 9, 1863. Taken by Dr. Reed Bontecou at Harewood Hospital in Washington, D.C. possibly in 1871. Snyder died three days after the leg’s amputation at Harewood Hospital in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 1864. His leg wound was possibly received during the Battle of Spotsylvania.
