Engraving of a lost daguerreotype portrait of Empress of Haiti Adélina Lévêque, c. 1850s. The daguerreotype was taken by the New York City photography firm Meade brothers. The engraving was originally published in the February 12, 1859 issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. There appears to be no known surviving original photos of Lévêque.

Daguerreotype of a group posing in front of a building containing J. H. Phillips' Photograph Gallery in St. Louis, Missouri, 1865. A display case of sample photos is visible at bottom right in front of the staircase and probably J. H. Phillips himself is posing in the second floor window of the gallery (which he had recently purchased). The photo is said to be a copy photo of a daguerreotype which was probably originally taken by Thomas Easterly. Easterly is the last known American daguerrean-era photographer to continue taking daguerreotypes into the 1870s.

The moving pedestrians and vehicles are for the most part so sharp that this would probably have been deemed to be an "instantaneous" photo by stereocard publishers 4-5 years later. Originally taken as a stereoscopic daguerreotype.

Cabinet card copy of a daguerreotype of streaks of lightning over St. Louis, Missouri, taken by photographer Thomas Easterly at 9:00 PM on June 18, 1847. The original daguerreotype is said to be lost today and the Missouri Historical Society only has this cabinet card copy in their collections.

Mystery Daguerreotype View of a Street in an Unidentified Town (1840s/1850s)

 

Daguerreotype view of a street in an unidentified town, c. 1840s/1850s. There is a sailing ship on a body of water visible at the end of the street, the masts of a few more ships to its right, and a building under construction in the distance at far right. The contour of the hills in the distance might one way the location of this daguerreotype is discovered because the street probably looks much different if this town is still around today. The Library of Congress only states that the daguerreotype was purchased at "Ranch Auction" in Switzerland in 1961.

Update: A viewer of my video on this daguerreotype on Youtube claims to have found the location where the photo was taken. The viewer claims that it was taken in Jamaica and has contacted the Library of Congress about the discovery.

Daguerreotype portrait of a group posing in front of Niagara Falls attributed to Thomas Easterly, c. 1850. A section from an 1838 poem about Niagara Falls by J. S. Buckingham is inscribed on the bottom of the plate and is signed in part "Easterly Daguerrean" at the end. The photo was possibly actually taken by photographer Platt D. Babbit, as he was known to take many photographs from this position during the 1850s.

Animated time-lapse daguerreotype view of the grave of Henry Clay, Jr. in Mexico taken by an unidentified photographer during the Mexican-American War, c. 1847. Lieutenant Colonel Clay was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847. It is unclear which grave was his, why the crosses seemed to be switched around between photos and also why the camera was moved.
